Dialogue – Pau Fabà Ubach

Dialogue – Pau Fabà Ubach

Two teachers of the Clot school, Brent and Samantha, are discussing how the new subject of “Use of Tech” should be.

Sam: I think something we cannot miss to teach in this course is the way students handle their privacy in the web.

Brent: Yes, I agree with you, but I believe that it is more important for them to know how to treat others in social media. People is often so disrespectful, and it is said that cyberbullying happens more commonly than physical bullying.

Sam: Of course, that is an important aspect to consider. However, at the end there will always be rude people in the internet. Studies have shown that people feel safer behind the screens, so they can insult or be ruder. In fact, that is a misconception because people and whatever they say are more exposed because everything stays registered.

Brent: Ok, now I understand what you are telling me. Actually, we could unite our thoughts in order to teach the students that they should be polite and respectful on the internet, not only because these are the values that our school fosters, but also because every word they write is exposed for anyone to see and could be used against them if needed.

Sam: Yes, that is what I was trying to say! Hahaha… Now that we have set the basis of the subject, why don’t we go for a coffee and continue debating?

Brent: Perfect, I’m so hungry by the way. I think I will have lunch as well. Let’s go!

Janet is a childhood friend of Willy, but Willy believes that his friend is messing with an otaku kid of her class, grieved for the behavior of his friend, Willy prepares to talk to her to make her see reason.
W: Hey Janet! How is it going?
J: Hi Will, time without seeing us, all good, and you?
W: meh ... I have found out things that do not make me very funny...
J: And that? For what is this?
W: * wrings his hands * you see, Janet, I've heard that you're constantly teasing David, is that true?
J: yes, but, he deserves it! He is a filthy otako! He doesn't shower and it smells bad! Also, he is a super bad person.
W: Janet, you are an abuser, you should stop, would you like to have that done to you? You should try talking to him; he sure is an interesting person.
J: What do you say? That's silly. He dislikes everyone because he is an idiot, he annoys you and then he gets angry when you return the joke, he defames everyone ... The fact that he is an otaku is the least ... What makes me one of the nerves is his way of being!
W: Is that really so?
J: I swear to you for everything you want.
W: I see ... In that case I suppose the problem is not yours. Thank you very much, Janet, and sorry for mistrusting you ... I'll talk to this guy David ... I'm going to tell him a couple of things.

Sarah and Chloe are talking about the behaviour of the second one, while they are eating in the school.

Sarah: Chloe it's been some time since I started to be worried about how you treat some girls in the school.
Chloe: I don't know what are you talking about, maybe occasionally I'm rude with some nasty girl but it isn't worrying.-She snapped-
Sarah: I'm just telling this to you because you are important to me and this demeanour is unacceptable, you have already grasped two girls this week, and I won't be your friend anymore if you don't change.-She responded with her head hanging down-
Chloe: I don't understand why are you acting so dramatically, you have always been by my side!
Sarah: If I am a true friend I also have to talk with you about the difficult issues, please reconsider your behaviour.- She said with a concealer tone-
Chloe: For me is difficult to deal with this. By the way, I will try to be kinder to all of these girls, maybe I have been like that because of my low self-love.

Teacher 2: Maybe because you are younger than me but student spend those hours making kahoots or editing images.
Teacher 1: They learn way more than that, they learn how to use new technologies such as word or power point, which will help in them professional life.
Teacher 2: Maybe you are right I don’t even know how to use power point, maybe it is an important subject.

Jean: Oh you are really exagerating! It is just a joke. I don't think he takes it seriously.

Jean: That's true... perhaps I wouldn't be happy with that. However, why haven't he said anything? If he told me to stop I would.
Paul: Of course because he is afraid, don't you feel compassion?
Jean: Yes kind of... Ok, I will stop from now

Johnny: Hi Eric, at the beginning of the day has been horrible, I’ve arrived late and our Philosophy teacher scored me a negative, but then, in History class Toni has distributed the global exams and I’ve been through it easily.

Eric: Nice, I would talk with you about your behaviour with all classroom. You know me, I always say what I think whoever it is.

Johnny: What are you taking about?

Eric: You are been disrespectful and bulling classroom partners. Also laughing of them for the simple reason that you are bigger than them and you can injury them seriously. Honestly, I think you don’t want to acknowledge it, but you really have to for your own good and for the others.
I’m saying all this because we are friends, you know.

Johnny: Ok, I understand. It’s real that sometimes I don’t behave as a normal guy of my age. For our relationship and as my close friend I will try to moderate my behaviour for our own good and for the others, as you already said.

Eric: Thank you, Johnny! I’m sure that classroom partners will behave as well as you behave with them.

Johnny: Thanks Eric for the suggestion. And now, let’s gonna play soccer at the playground.

Eric: Of course!

Victor: This is a serious, Pol. Carlos went home crying and when she arrived, she immediately call us.
Pol: That’s bullshit.

You suspect a friend of yours is a bully but he/she does not want to acknowledge it. Write a conversation with him/her in which you explain why you think he/she should stop this behaviour. Suggest possible measures to help him/her fight this addiction.

Amy – Hey Sam, how are you getting along with Alex?
Sam –  Hey Amy! He’s a very boring and strange person. I don't like he. Why you ask?
Amy – I think you treat him badly and you should change your attitude with him.
Sam – But I do treat him great!
Amy – I think he feels bad as you’re with him, he always ends up crying for the jokes and comments you make to him.
Sam – Seriously? I hadn't seen it that way. In this case, I think you should change with him and try not to offend him. But, how can I do it?
Amy -  It's very simple! I think you should be friendly with him and don't make so many jokes about him, because they can be bad for him.
Sam – It's ok, I'll do it! I hope I never do something like that again.

Tom and Zack are two good friends that have met in the square for taking a walk. Tom wants to ask Zack if it’s true that he is harassing their friend Alex. If that’s true, he will talk with Zack in order to stop his bad behaviour.

Tom: Hey Zack, it’s true that you are harassing Alex. If that’s true, you should stop doing this, as I never expected that you were a bully.

Zack: Are you kidding me? I’ve just kicked him a couple of times when he decided not to give me his lunch.

Tom: Hey Tom, that’s not fair. You cannot abuse of people by intimidating them only because you practice martial arts and you are taller and stronger than others.

Zack: Yes, but before that, Alex was all the time mocking about me. He was all the time making fun of my calligraphy and insulting me when I was working on my computer.

Tom: Oh, I didn’t know that. Ok, I’ll talk with Alex and ask him not to continue doing that. But also I want that you go to Alex and talk with him, as you should be friends and not be fighting and discussing all the time

Zack: Ok, I would do that, but if he doesn’t changes, I would not change either.

Yolanda and Paloma are on the teacher’s room discussing about ICT, a new subject which their school will start teaching the next year.

Paloma: I wonder why the director has not decided to start teaching ICT until now. It was such a needed and demanded subject.

Yolanda: Well I’m pretty sure there’re more important things to address at the moment than teach kids how to use mobile phones.

Paloma: But ICT is more than just teach how to use a phone, they’ll be taught how to navigate through the internet safely.

Yolanda: Well, I bet they’ll use that hour to play with their phones.

Paloma: Yolanda you aren’t even listening to me, are you? Then, could you come up with another way to teach kids the dangers and benefits of the usage of new technologies?

Dialogue - Iván Espinosa

Me: Hey, what's going on?

Bully: Not much man. I was messing some children and they gave me their snack money.

M: That's horrible!! You are a bully!! You need to stop this right now.

B: I can't it's like an animal instinct for me.

M: I'll give you some tips to solve this attitude. The first step is to return everything you have stolen in the past and you must ask for their forgiveness. If you have a lot of stress accumulated, you should join a martial arts gym or any sports club. Punching a boxing bag is very reassuring and it’s healthy.

B: Thanks Iván, you are a nice friend. Give me your snack money.

Marc and Sara are two teachers who are discussing the rights and the wrongs
of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which is useful to learn
how to use new technologies, as a school subject.

Marc: I’ve listened that school principal is considering making ICT an obligatory
subject. I think it’s a good opportunity for the students. Don’t you agree?

Sara: That’s true, but on the other hand I believe it should be optional. No
everyone feels the necessity of learning how to use new technologies.

Marc: I see what you mean but, in fact, that’s the reason why it must be
obligatory. I mean, nowadays we need technology for almost everything we do.
This way students would be more prepared for the labor market.

Sara: Absolutely, but at the same time new generations already have this
knowledge about ICT, they learn on their own.
Marc: You’re right. Maybe we should ask students for their opinion.

Joe: I don’t think that he would explain the situation. I have an argument with the boy and I insulted him because he deserves it, I don’t think that I did it wrong.

Nick: Yes, you did it wrong! You have to think that you can’t act as you had done because you can have a fight but you can’t insult you have to talk and solve the problem.

Fernanda and Carol, two teachers, are discussing about which could be the impact of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) as a new school subject.

Fernanda: Increasingly, the work of the future is more dependent of technology. We must teach our kids to learn skills about how to manage Information and Communication Technology or they won’t have opportunities to work.

Carol: I couldn’t agree more with you. At these days, boys and girls born with a mobile telephone on their hands. Ten years ago, this wasn’t expectable. We have to consider that this new generations probably know better and more about technology, this means that teachers should pass a training. Although, this would be expensive and some teachers won’t agree with the idea.

Fernanda: Absolutely, but we should consider that ICT, would be a primary school subject, we would be teaching basic, minimal concepts about informatics. So, it has to be easily comprehensible for us. I don’t see any problem about this. It’s a necessary thing.

Carol: Exactly. I cannot wait to learn new things and teach useful concepts for the kids.

Fernanda: Me neither. It’s beautiful and I’m grateful to be part of the evolution of education.

Dave: Jessie you must stop harassing Mike! He hasn’t done anything to you. You bully him only because he has better marks than you. I’d never have thought that you were gonna be a bully! You disappoint me mate.

Jessie: Do you really believe that silly people that say I’m a bully? Y’all are exaggerated. I’ve only push him a couple times, but I was only joking, I swear to God!

Dave: Come on Jessie, I talked with Mike yesterday and he told me everything you did to him. You even punched him once because he just looked you in the eyes, don’t you?

Jessie: It wasn’t like that! He was provoking me. I had my hair cut and he told to me that I looked like Caillou and then he looked at me like trying to make punch him. How about that? I’m sure Mike didn’t told you that, did him?

Dave: I’m sure he was only joking. You should calm down and apologize to him. I only wanna help you. You’re my friend and I don't want you to get in trouble. Maybe it would be good for you to talk with an adult about you family problems.

Jessie: You can’t be serious! I’m okay. I will apologize to Mike only if he do it first. And don’t talk to me about Mike anymore, is it clear? Now, let’s enter to the lab.

Susie and Gwen are two close friends. Susie believes Gwen is the responsible of that girl named Trisha being harassed; she (Susie) is going to have a serious conversation with her (Gwen) in the girl’s locker room.

Susie. Gwen, please stop! Stop arguing and listen to me, please. I know you’re the one who’s been harassing that girl for over a week now and I can’t believe it. We’ve been friends for a very long time and I never thought of you being a… bully.

Gwen. But who told you that, Sue? I’ve never touched that girl and I wouldn’t do it… I really think you shouldn't believe everything you hear, hon.

Susie. Gwen stop it! I’ve been talking with Trisha and she told me it was you. She looked extremely upset and I don’t even want to know what you’ve done to her but you have to end with this situation.

Gwen. I don’t think that I’ve done anything wrong. You know,  it’s not really my problem if she is to sensitive and can’t handle well some constructive criticism. I guess it’s true that I’ve been talking to her for the past days but I’ve never been rude or anything.

Susie. Trisha is not the only one who has confirmed it was you but I don’t want to argue. As I said, I’m your friend, I know your situation at home and let me tell you that it’s know that most of the times bullies tend to have difficult moments at their own home. Gwen, I think you need help with this and I want to help you. The best thing you can do right now is apologise to her and hopefully, find the help you need from an adult.

Gwen.  Why don’t you mind your own business, Sue? I don’t get why are you making such a big deal of this situation and I repeat, I don’t believe that I’ve done anything bad. Anyways, gotta leave now… guess I’ll see you at class.

Sean and Dave, on their way to school, are talking about Dave’s conflictive attitude behind other classmates.
Sean: I think that you must stop annoying our classmates. I think you have become a bully. When you do something “funny” to someone, everyone laughs unless that someone. That’s not fair.
Dave: I don’t agree with you. I do jokes to make everyone laugh. If the person helping me doesn’t laugh because he or she doesn’t have humour, it’s not my fault.
Sean: I think that a good joke it’s the one that makes everyone laugh without the need of making someone feel bad. Can you try to do that kind of jests please?
Dave: Yes, I’ll try. Thank you for telling me what you think. And I’ll say sorry to all people I’ve annoyed with my jokes. Thank you for make my think and realize about my mistakes.

Flors Riera Enseñat: Dialogue

Harry is talking to his friend Louis during their free period about how he should avoid making disrespectful comments, since they may hurt other people’s feelings.

Harry: I believe you should go and apologize to Eleanor for what you said earlier about her look, it was kind of mean, you know? She was just so excited about trying on something different and you made her feel ridiculous with your comment.
Louis: I don’t get it, what did I do wrong? I just stated a fact! It is not my fault that it looks like she has borrowed Miley Cyrus’ craziest era clothing when we all know that she is just an average girl who likes to read and make pies.
Harry: Louis, you need to understand something here: it may be true that this look doesn’t exactly fit her personality, but she was not feeling comfortable in her old apparel any longer and simply felt like spicing it up a little. Besides, it is none of our business; she can wear whatever she wants to!
Louis: Of course, but I’m also free of speaking my mind and say whatever I’m thinking.
Harry: You are, just as long as it doesn’t hurt other people’s feelings! What I’m trying to say here is that you could have said the same thing in a much nicer approach, just like: “Oh wow new look! Rather unexpected but good for you for giving it a go”. That way you still show how you are not completely sure if it suits her, but you do it on a nice note.
Louis: I mean, I still think what I said wasn’t so bad but sure, I guess it wouldn’t be that difficult to be a little bit more positive. I’ll just have to work on it for a bit though, ‘cause right now it just doesn’t come naturally to me.
Harry: Well, I might be able to help you with that. What about if you write down five rude comments and try to turn them into constructive criticism? I believe if you do so every day, you’ll soon find it a lot easier!
Louis: Ugh! It sounds boring, yet I think I may give it a try. I mean, it can't make me any worse, can it?
Harry: No it can’t, and if you need any help, you may just ask me for it. Now go talk to Eleanor before we need to go back to class, and remember, be positive!

DIALOGUE - Sergio López Soto

Natalie and Christian, two teachers, are talking in the teachers’ room while they are preparing their next lesson at their free time.
Christian: Have you heard that the director wants to add a new subject, Information and Communication Technology, for following year? That’s insane! Teaching teenagers how to use new technologies is very dangerous, they could use those technologies to do bad things. Don’t you think?
Natalie: I don’t agree with you at all! You should trust more your students; they are the future. The more things they learn, the better it is for everyone. So, I think that teaching ICT would be a great improvement for the schools and for the students, of course. We all have benefits.
Christian: Really? Don’t you see how dangerous it is? In addition, the school will have to spend a lot of money in order to buy computers, keyboards and all that stuff. I think they should use all that money to do important things, like increasing our salaries, we deserve it.
Natalie: Wow, your way of thinking is quite selfish. Did you know that it is said that soon most of the jobs will be related to technology? So, ICT is very important in any school. I think it’s necessary that the students know how to use new technologies to be able to apply it in their jobs.
Christian: Well, I don’t want to discuss more about it, and I have class in five minutes.
Natalie: Okay, see you next Monday then.

DIALOGUE-Emma Ballestero

Emma’s friend, Pau, and Emma, think their friend’s behavior isn’t right, so they decide to talk to him even though they know there’s a chance he won’t realize what’s really going on and the damage he’s doing.

Emma: We have to talk to him; I don’t want them to think he’s really a bad person, because I don’t think he is. He’s not behaving well, but when I went to talk to him, he dodged me on this subject and didn’t want to talk about it.
Pau: I can’t believe what you’re saying to me, you’re absolutely right. We need to stop this as soon as possible. By the way, we must speak to him in a subtle way, without it appearing as if we are incriminating him; only then will we be able to get him to admit it if all this is true.
Emma: I think the best way to let him know that this is not the right thing to do is to tell him to put himself in other people’s shoes, and not to do what he doesn’t want them to do to him.
Pau: I agree with you, only in this way will we get him to put this bad behavior aside and return everything to normal.

David and Laura are two ESO teachers who are discussing about the convenience of introducing ICT (Information and Communication Technology) as a school subject.
David: I’m not sure what the principal will decide, but in my opinion introducing two hours of ICT is a very good idea.
Laura: Are you sure, David? This means two hours of another subject will be taken out. In addition, I don’t think it is that important to learn about new technologies.
David: I don’t agree with you. In the world we’re living our students will have to control new technologies if they want to have a qualified job.
Laura: Well, that’s true. However, from my point of view, new generations already have this knowledge about ICT, they learn on their own with videogames, etc.
David: Yes, you are right. Nowadays, babies know more about technology than us! The classes should be for us instead.

William and I have been friends for many years. Lately I have noticed inappropriate behavior in him that should change; therefore, we are having a conversation on the way out of the institute.

Anna: I've been thinking about telling you that there are certain behaviors that you should change. You know that I consider you a great friend but I cannot bear the injustices and from what I see, you are making 3 innocent young people have a very bad time. Are you aware, right?

William: It is they who should defend themselves in addition, you should not position yourself against me. I only help them to be savvier.

Anna: If you really think that doing that helps them, you are totally wrong. Imagine that the situation was reversed. I think you wouldn’t like to have it done to you. So, now you can start correcting your mistakes.

William: Maybe you are right, I will apologize but it wasn’t my intention to harm them, I just wanted to have fun.

Anna: The issue isn’t having fun harming others, but having fun with others. I'm glad you have reconsidered. Let's have a coffee?

William: Great!

Jack and Sam are in the school’s cafeteria having breakfast while discussing whether ICT should be a school subject or not.

Jack: The school principal has just told me he’s considering making ICT an obligatory subject instead of being an optional one. What’s your opinion about it?

Sam: Well, I don’t know… I mean, obviously I think it’s helpful and gets the students more prepared for the labour market, but I don’t see the necessity of making it obligatory.

Jack: I get your point of view but as you said, it would only beneficiate the students so I can’t find the problem in making it obligatory. Nowadays we depend on technologies and we should be able to work with them, so what better way than give them the opportunity to learn it in school. It’s our job to give them all the tools they need so that they can study any degree.

Sam: I agree, but what I meant to say is that I’m of the opinion that they are capable of learning this by themselves, they’ve pretty much grown up with a phone at their hands. Making ICT an obligatory subject would mean reducing another subject’s hours, a subject that I’m almost certain they wouldn’t learn if not in here.

Jack: You’ve made your point and convinced me. Although, currently, it’s very important to keep up with the new technologies, it should keep being an optional subject so that one those who need it for their career invert time in learning how to work with them.

Sam: Exactly. Hey, I’ve got to get going. I have class in ten minutes and I don’t want to be late or else they’ll start going crazy.

Jack: Yeah, of course. Don’t worry. See you later!

You suspect a friend of yours is a bully but he/she does not want to acknowledge it. Write a conversation with him/her in which you explain why you think he/she should stop this behaviour. Suggest possible measures to help him/her fight this addiction.
JUNE 2013

Me and my friend, Marc, on the way to school we are talking about his behavior and why he should stop it.
Tània:  Marc do you know that what you do is wrong, don’t you? Because you are hurting a lot of people doing this.
Marc:  I can’t believe what you’re saying! You’re my friend and you should support me.
Tània: You don’t know what you’re saying, what you do is unforgivable. You should think about it because I’m sure you wouldn’t like if somebody do it to you.
Marc: So if I’m such a bad person, why don’t you stop talking to me?
Tània: I’m here to help you because you’re my friend. You can start apologizing to them. And then, we can talk about what’s next.
Marc: OK, but with a condition, you must be always by my side.
Tània: Of course, we’re friends and we’ll ever be friends.
